Maintenance of a dry dock in the Antwerp-Bruges harbour

OBO convinces with BIM@OBO and stainless steel cable ladders

As part of the renovation of the dry dock, OBO scored with outstanding support during the planning process, winning over the customer: BIM@OBO, the practical OBO solution for BIM-compliant planning in the electrical industry, shined.

Project description

The Antwerp-Bruges harbour is the second-largest harbour in Europe. It is also home to the Engine Deck Repair (EDR) shipyard. Engine Deck Repair maintains the largest dry dock system in Belgium. Dry docks are used to drain ships to be able to perform repairs on them. Large ships are often built completely in dry docks, as they can be flooded easily upon completion until the ship is floating and can exit.

Dry dock 5 at the EDR shipyard in the Antwerp-Bruges harbour was renovated as part of this project. This included maintenance of the concrete and steel construction, as well as the complete renovation of the electromechanical systems.

General building information

Dry dock 5 itself is 265 metres long and 39 metres wide, with a depth of 8 metres. It consists of four underground levels and various tunnels. In these tunnels, OBO cable ladders were installed as part of maintenance – a total of four layers of stainless steel cable ladders now safely route cables through the tunnels.

Why did the customer choose OBO products?

OBO scored with outstanding support during the planning process, winning over the customer: BIM@OBO, the practical OBO solution for BIM-compliant planning in the electrical industry, shined. This enabled the customer to plan everything down to the last detail in advance, saving them both time and money while preventing project delays.

For this project, OBO provided stainless steel LCIS cable ladders, wall and support brackets, as well as screw connectors. Stainless steel is especially corrosion-resistant, rustproof and can also resist extreme weather conditions and environmental influences, such as salt water or maritime climates.
